Government of India has enacted the RTI Act 2005 for setting out the practival regime of right to information for citizen to secure access to information under the control of public authorities, in order to promote transparency and accountability in the working of every public authority.
The Mahatma Gandhi Labour Institute (MGLI), established by Government of Gujarat, has been constituted as a Society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, in Order to undertake activities relating to education, research and training in labour related subjects. MGLI is a national level premier Institute in this field. Members of the Institute represent workers' organizations, employers' organizations, and the Government of Gujarat. In addition, the Institute's members include a representative of the Ministry of Labour, Government of India, and of New Delhi Office of the International Labour Organisation. The Institute's activities are largely framed by the Government of Gujarat.
Transparency International India (TII) is an intiative of civil Society to combat corruption in public system by dissenminating information and knowledge of good governance.TII sponsors various studies on corruption in public system and the people's perceptions thereof and also pursues the implementation of issues like Citizen Charter, Integrity Pact and Rightto Information Act.
Implementation of Right to Information Act can help in improving governance for the benefit of common man. Prior to the Right to Information Act, the government had introduced Citizen's Charter as a tool for good governance by ensuring standards, quality and commitment of time frame for the delivery of services to the citizens.
MGLI in collaboration with TII (Gujarat Chapter) is organizing a two-day Workshop on Improving Governance on 12-13 April, 2007, at 10.0 a.m. at MGLI, Drive-in Road, Opp: Manav Mandir, Ahmedabad 380 052.
The seminar would take stock of the implementation of RTI Act and Citizen's Charter within the government, while NGOs are expected in this workshop to share the knowledge and experience. The main objective of the workshop is to look at the challenges in implementation from the stakeholders point of view and document possible options for overcoming this by way of experience sharing.
